A group of American
medical doctors from Lakeland, Florida, have operated on two children
in the city of Balti while in Moldova as part of a humanitarian
mission. They claimed no payment for the surgeries.
Pedro Soler, one of them, said that in one case of surgery it was
about correcting a malformation known as "wolf mouth". The surgery
was successful, and the child will be able to eat, speak and hear
normally after further treatment, he said. The second child was
operated on twice, for "wolf mouth" and "hare lip". Both children are
fine.
Moldovan medicine specialists assisted the American doctors. A
surgery of this kind costs in the United States about 15,000 dollars.
The team of U.S. physicians arrived in Moldova to conduct medical
diagnosis and treatment of children with hearing problems.
The Lakeland community has implemented a number of social projects in
Balti. One of them was the opening of a centre for protection of
children's hearing, a facility provided with equipment worth more
than 100,000 dollars.
