Moldova and Romania are intending to collaborate in the European integration field, Presidents Vladimir Voronin and Traian Basescu stated after their tĂȘte-Ă -tĂȘte conversation here today.
On Friday, Basescu paid a flying visit to Chisinau on the invitation of President Voronin who stated to journalists that the sides had reached "very and very important accords", but he did not provide details.
"We will have to make very much together, particularly in what concerns European integration", Voronin said. He voiced content with Traian Basescu's stand on the Transnistrian question as well as on the Declaration on Stability and Security for the Republic of Moldova.
Vladimir Voronin emphasized that Moldova had looked forward to seeing Romanian President very long, because it was 6 years ago when Romanian leader came to Moldova last.
"It is abnormal when inter-state bilateral relations are frozen or almost frozen. I guess many questions we discussed today will now resolved", the Moldovan President said.
Traian Basescu said he had accepted the invitation to come to Chisinau with great satisfaction and hope. In his words, Romania and the Republic of Moldova have much in common, and are united with one common goal to accede to the European Union. "Romania deeply respects the Republic of Moldova as a sovereign and independent state, and is ready to be the republic's advocate on its way to the European Union", he said.
Traian Basescu stressed Romania will not permit the Republic of Moldova to be blackmailed in energy matters: "Each time when the question of electricity supply arises, it is enough to make a telephone call to Bucharest, and Moldova will see it has true friends there". He reminded that an important decision on supplying electricity to Moldova was taken in Bucharest yesterday.
He thinks it is very essential to develop bilateral relations not only on the level of presidents but also between business circles. Mr. Basescu said he is ready to promote the establishment of mutually beneficial ties between people of business in the two countries.
After that meeting, Traian Basescu came out of the Office of the President where several dozen people were waiting in the street. Mostly, those were refugees from Transnistria who were crying out pro-Romania slogans. The Romanian leader came up to them, shook hands, and exchanged questions and answers, after which he returned to his car where Vladimir Voronin was already waiting him.
Romania hopes that the March 6 parliamentary elections in Moldova will be free and correct, Romanian President Traian Basescu stated to journalists here after his meetings with the leaders of parliamentary factions.
It is his deep conviction that the question of Moldova's integration into the European Union will depend also on how the election is held here this spring.
"Romania will unconditionally back Moldova on its way to the European Union. This way will begin from the March 6 parliamentary election. Nobody will be able to help the Republic of Moldova in its European integration efforts if the election results are doubtful", said the new Romanian leader, adding that Romania will delegate its observers to the elections, "quite many observers".
In his words, during his meetings with parliamentary faction leaders here today he became convinced these were people of a pro-Europe orientation who want to consolidate relations with Romania.
"We have a common history, so our future in the big European family should be common as well", Traian Basescu said.
