Nearly 400 thousand transnistrians have Moldovan passports

July 16 2007

Print version

The Government of Moldova has extended until the end of 2007 its Resolution on measures to confirm the Republic of Moldova citizenship by residents of the Transnistrian region.

The Ministry of Reintegration explained that not all wishing Transnistrians have yet managed to obtain documents confirming their Moldovan citizenship - foreign-travel passports and domestic identification cards. The Resolution envisages a preferential scheme of acquiring the citizenship by the Transnistrians.

Since September 2005 (when the Resolution was put into effect) and until 2006, the said Moldovan documents were issued to 42 thousand residents of Transnistria, enabling them to travel freely abroad and enjoy privileges available for all residents of the Republic of Moldova. As for the documents of the self-style Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, they have not been recognized even by a single state in the world, so they are used only inside the region.

According to the Ministry of Reintegration, the number of Transnistrian residents bearing Moldovan passports and their children included into the documents has by now reached 400 thousand. The official Tiraspol said the region's populace presently constitutes 542 thousand people. Fortunately, the unrecognized republic permits dual citizenship, so besides Transnistrian passport, practically every adult person there has also a Moldovan, Russian or Ukrainian passport.
